The Rival
If the moon smiled, she would resemble you.
You leave the same impression
Of something beautiful, but annihilating.
both of oyu are great light borrowers.
Her O-mouth grieves at the world; yours is unaffected,
And your first gift is making stone out of everything.
I wake to a mausoleum; you are here,
ticking your fingers on the marble table, looking for
cigarettes,
Spiteful as a woman, but not so nervous,
And dying to say something unanswerable.
the moon, too, abases her subjects,
But in the daytime she is ridiculous.
Your dissatisfactions, on the other hand,
Arrive through the mailslot with loving regularity,
White and blank, expansive as carbon monoxide.
no day is safe from news from you,
walking about in Africa maybe, but thinking of me.

birthday party
for Alex Tsiotinis
we can create a new language
we can translate our dreams
and write them on the walls
before we bring them down
we will missbehave like children do
dance in our boulevards
climb on our mountains
striptease in our fountains
our beloved girls will spread
their laughter in the periphery
they will call our names
pour wine for us
and light the candles
we will see then what summer really looks like
as your wish lights the perfect sky.

the shortest distance between two points just may not be a straight line
for my daughter Dimitra.
a very young Indian
(or is she Mexican
or Surinamese ?)
girl
not even ten years old yet
riding her bicycle in a New York cul de sac
on a hot July day
her face a manifesto of innocence
a cardinal, red and proud
comes and lands on the typewriter
I just threw out
convinced this writer's block would never end.
his dance is a wonder to her
the stray cat with no tail stares at the bird behind the torn fence
still like a sniper
waiting for the moment to burst forth.
I throw a baseball at the fence
the feline loses the element of surprise
the bird continues performing the tap dance
from G to M
the girl smiles at me with the absolute precision
creatures her age do.
my next sip of mocha iced coffee is not indifferent
not aloof from passion
but full of flavor and new found honesty
unable to turn back I pick up a pencil.
her younger sister appears from the back yard
with an even smaller bike.
